Week 7 Football: United South 27, Nixon 13

United South overcame its mistakes and took advantage of Nixon's to beat the Mustangs 27-13 at the SAC on Saturday night.
Despite a number of flags (the two teams combined for roughly 20 penalties), drops and a costly lost fumble on the Nixon 1-yard line, the Panthers (2-4 District 29-5A, 2-5 overall) were able to find the offensive cohesion that often eluded them earlier in the season as they piled 393 yards atop the Mustangs (1-5, 1-6).
Leading the way for United South was junior quarterback Robert Camarillo who threw 40 passes and completed 28 of them for 292 yards and three touchdowns from behind the excellent protection of his offensive line, which allowed Camarillo to be taken down only once behind the line of scrimmage.
Camarillo's favorite target of the night was wide receiver Orlando Contreras, who had eight catches for 104 yards and a single score.
The Panthers were led in the running game by sophomore Luis Castillo, who had 51 yards on 13 touches.
Nixon’s offense was able to produce 283 yards, but few scores to show for it as the Mustangs were intercepted twice and fumbled a third turnover away.
The Mustangs took turns with Manny Martinez and Joseph Contreras at the quarterback position until handing the reigns entirely over to Contreras in the second half.
Contreras finished with 89 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 10 of 19 passing, while Martinez threw for 68 yards on six of nine passing.
Nixon had seven different players carry the ball and was led in that department by Ritchie Rendon, who had 41 yards and a touchdown on eight attempts.
Mustangs wide receiver Danny Martinez had his team's lone receiving score among his three catches for 45 yards.
Wide receiver Jesus Perez led the Mustangs in receptions with four for 77 yards.
Always good for a bit of trickery, the Mustangs got their biggest play of the night on a reverse-turned-wide receiver pass when Perez found an open Danny Martinez behind the defense for 34 yards on a play which was nearly a 90-yard touchdown.
One Nixon player was injured on the night. Defensive lineman Larry Banda was hurt during a fake-punt attempt and left the field on a backboard.
It's the second loss to injury for the Mustangs, who also saw linebacker Robert Rocha go down for the season with an ankle injury weeks ago in a game against Alexander.

10.15.10: Volleyball: Nixon 3, United South 0

Nixon continues to be the hottest team of the second round of District 29-5A volleyball and is making a strong statement heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
The Lady Mustangs have only dropped one district game in the second round and are galloping closer to a playoff spot after sweeping United South 25-11, 25-15 and 25-16 Saturday afternoon at the Richard Barton gymnasium.
Senior Rosalynn Velasquez paced the Lady Mustangs at the net with 13 kills while Sammie Garcia added nine.
Nixon's (10-5 29-5A, 20-15) defense was anchored by senior libero Celinda Verastigui with 12 digs.
The Lady Mustangs jumped all over United South in the opening game, taking a 16-5 lead. Velasquez and Garcia were monsters at the net as they toyed with the United South defense and recorded nine kills.
The Lady Panthers had a hard time firing up their service receive and Nixon took advantage of their misfortune, taking game one, 25-11.
United South (1-14 29-5A) finally started to find some success in the second game as it kept pace with the Lady Mustangs and knotted the game at 15 apiece before the wheels of its offense fell off.
Nixon rolled off 10 straight points to take Game 2 and have a 2-0 advantage.
The Lady Panthers never stopped fighting, but a strong performance by the Nixon offense that never stopped sending a barrage of balls that were mishandled by United South’s defense opened their lead on their way to a 25-16 lead.

10.12.10: Volleyball: Del Rio 3, United South 1

The Queens won. Del Rio improved to 7-7 in District 29-5A. South fell to 1-13 and 8-20 overall. Leading the way for South was Leslie Campos (eight kills), Rhodale Covington (10 kills), Amy Castro (seven kills) and Ashley Gutierrez (10 sets).

Week 6 Football: Del Rio 49, United South 24

The Rams jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead behind two Diego Cadena touchdowns before settling for the win. Del Rio improved to 3-2 in District 29-5A, 4-2 overall. South fell to 1-4 in district, 1-5 overall.

10.09.10: Volleyball: Eagle Pass 3, United South 0

The Lady Eagles swept, 25-13, 25-10, 25-12. Eagle Pass improved to 13-0 in District 29-5A, 27-5 overall. South fell to 1-12, 8-19.

Week 5 Football: Eagle Pass 42, United South 21

United South hosted Eagle Pass in a noon game Saturday where both teams got off to hot starts en route to a high-scoring 42-21 Eagles victory at the SAC.

Eagle Pass improved to 3-1 in District 29-5A, 4-1 overall. South fell to 1-3, 1-4.

Eagle Pass entered the game missing its star quarterback Tommy Galvan due to a concussion he received in his team's loss to United in last week.

Wide receiver Hector Gloria played the role of the signal-caller in Galvan's stead and the Eagles didn't miss a beat, racking up 392 yards of total offense.

The first half ended much the same as it started as each team found quick scores in the final minutes.

United South's score came with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter when quarterback Robert Camarillo hit Orlando Contreras for a 70-yard touchdown pass.

Initially it had looked like Contreras was tackled when landed on top of the defender, but he never actually touched the turf. The confused Eagle Pass defense gave up on the play as Contreras got to his feet and ran the rest of the way in for the score.

Contreras finished the game with a team-leading 130 yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions.

Eagle Pass responded to the long score quickly, however, putting its own points on the board with a 63-yard drive that lasted just over a minute and a half.

The Eagles capped the drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Gloria to running back Hector Pinales.

The second half began with an on-the-field scuffle when United South starting running back Luis Castillo exchanged blows with Eagle Pass linebacker Luis Gonzalez.

Castillo was replaced by Paul Lopez in the second half and Lopez made the most of his carries, 37 yards on eight touches, to lead the team in rushing.

The Panthers kept the game within reach through the first three quarters and had a chance to close the difference to seven at the end of the third.

After forcing an Eagle Pass fumble to get the ball at midfield, the Panthers drove down to the 2-yard line before Camarillo was sacked on a fourth-down attempt.

All told, Camarillo put on a solid performance despite being sacked six times. The junior quarterback completed 21 of 32 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns against just a single interception.

Camarillo's second favorite target was Ricky De La Rosa, who had four catches for 54 yards and a touchdown.

The Panthers finished the day with 300 total yards of offense.

The Eagles were led offensively by the arm and legs of Gloria. Gloria completed 18 of 25 passes for 195 yards and four touchdowns in addition to 54 rushing yards on seven carries.

Gloria's favorite target was Rolando Salinas, who caught 12 passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns.

Salinas also ran for 39 yards on six carries. Rolando Maldonado led the Eagles in rushing with 66 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.

10.02.10: Volleyball: United 3, United South 2

The second round of District 29-5A volleyball seems to be a thorn in the side of the top four teams with two dropping games this week.
Earlier in the week, Cigarroa fell to Nixon to throw a monkey wrench into the playoff scene and Saturday afternoon, United South almost pulled off an upset.
United (9-2 29-5A, 16-12) held off United South's (0-11, 7-18) late surge to hold on to a 26-28, 25-21, 25-13, 21-25 and 15-10 victory at the United South gymnasium.
Junior setter-hitter Natalie Chavez, who earlier in the day captured individual girls' title at the Dr. Marissa Keene Memorial cross country meet, did not skip a beat on the volleyball court as she recorded a team-high 16 kills. She added 21 assists, nine points and 12 digs.
Teammate Ashley Everett backed Chavez with 12 kills and three blocks.
Everett was instrumental in keeping the Lady Longhorns in the games with kills that came at moments when her team needed a boost.

09.28.2010: Volleyball: Alexander 3, United South 0

The Lady Bulldogs swept, 25-22, 25-17, 25-10. Alexander improved to 9-1 in District 29-5A, 19-4 overall. United South fell to 0-10, 7-17. Leading the way for Alexander was Alexa Salazar (15 digs, nine points) and Darian Canno (four kills, two blocks, two digs).

Week 4: Football: United South 23, Martin 20

After experimenting with a new spread offense for their first three games of the season, the Martin Tigers decided to go old school with a surprise return to the double wing formation.

But even the unexpected change of offensive scheme wasn't enough to overcome the hunger of the United South Panthers.

The Panthers had their best game of the season en route to a 23-20 victory Thursday night at the SAC.

South improved to 1-2 in District 29-5A, 1-3 overall. Martin fell to 0-3, 0-4.

"Winning answers a lot of things and all a sudden everything's okay," said United South head football coach Jose Briones. "Whether you win by 50 or one, it's the same feeling."

It took a second half comeback to win it for the Panthers, who trailed 14-10 at the half.

The Tigers had a chance to tie on their final drive, but missed on a 45-yard field goal as time expired.

Camarillo finished the game with 120 passing yards, completing 8 of 21 attempts, in addition to adding two touchdown runs of 19 and 51 yards, respectively.

United South tailbacks Luis Castillo and Paul Lopez shared rushing duties evenly. Lopez had 16 yards and a touchdown on eight carries and Castillo had 33 yards on eight.

Castillo doubled as the team's leading receiver with four catches for 66 yards.

Martin totaled 195 yards of offense on the night, barely outdone by United South's 237.

Tigers senior quarterback Luis Diaz-Deleon completed 10 of 14 passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.

Nearly half of Martin's entire varsity roster touched the ball in the night's game. Ten of the 23 varsity athletes had carries, and an eleventh had a reception.

Tailback Mario Trevino led the Tigers with 32 yards on eight carries a

09.25.2010: LBJ 3, United South 1

LBJ took down United South, 5-25, 25-12, 25-22, 25-23. Jeniffer Salinas (three blocks, two kills, three digs), Lizzette Martinez (22 digs, nine kills) and Leticia Reyes (12 digs, 10 kills) led LBJ to the victory. LBJ improved to 2-7 in district. South fell to 0-9.

09.21.2010: Volleyball: C.C. Winn 3, United South 2

The Lady Mavs won, 19-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-18, 15-11. Winn improved to 3-5 in district. South fell to 0-8, 7-15. Rhodale Covington (eight kills), Brandy Molina (five kills) and Lindsay Campos (three kills) led South.

Monday, September 20, 2010

Week 3: Football: United 61, United South 3

United South hosted United on a waterlogged Friday night at the SAC. But the Panthers were no match for the Longhorns.

United improved to 2-0 in District 29-5A play, 2-1 overall, with a demonstrative 61-3 win.

South fell to 0-3, 0-2 in district.

The Longhorns started senior Joey Zepeda, their backup quarterback, due to Tony Salas sitting out due to a sprained shoulder.

Zepeda was in the zone all night – literally, in the end zone, with two passing and one rushing touchdowns in the first half alone.

Every facet of the 'Horns' game increased the score, though, with Billy Williams' kickoff return and Kurt Kuriata's blocked punt and the following recovery for the touchdown.

The Longhorns' defense also reached paydirt on a last second interception-and-touchdown in the waning ticks of the first half. The extra point attempt was missed in the 'Horns' last two scores of the half, raising the score to 47-3 at the half.

Panthers quarterback Robert Camarillo completed a plethora of difficult passes for huge gains in the first half, but his efforts were for naught due to penalties.

The referees' yellow flags stymied the Panthers from their first defensive play – a spectacular stuffed run for no gain – when a 15-yard facemasking call granted United favorable field position.

Camarillo made smart plays all night long, for the most part. He consistently threw the ball away when pressured, and put the perfect amount of touch on passes when needed, but his performance throughout the evening was blemished by the two interceptions he tossed within the two-minute warning before halftime. One of those picks was returned for a touchdown.

Going into the half, the only points that the Panthers could post would be their first drive's field goal.

09.18.2010: Volleyball: Cigarroa 3, United South 1

Cigarroa had a turbulent week that saw it drop consecutive District 29-5A games, but Saturday afternoon, the Toros looked like the Toros of old.

The Lady Toros beat Southside rival,United South in four games, 25-9, 15-25, 25-9 and 27-25 at the Cigarroa gymnasium.

Cigarroa (5-2 29-5A, 18-11) is two games behind district leader Eagle Pass, which is undefeated in district play, while the Lady Panthers (0-7, 7-14) are still searching for their first win of the district season.

United South had to take the court without its head coach Andrea Pierce-Garza, who is out on maternity leave due to the birth of her daughter, Madeline Jade Garza, who weighs 8 lbs, 13 oz, on Sept. 16.

Jessica Ramirez, the varsity assistant, has been named the interim head coach until the return of Pierce-Garza in a few weeks.

Cigarroa also had to take the court with a new lineup because a rash of injuries and sickness hit the team earlier in the week.

Cigarroa did a great job of adjusting without the service of their starting setters, Raquel Martinez and Dee Dee Riojas.

Stepping in to fill those shoes were senior Michelle Alvarez and junior Sandra Ambriz.

The Lady Toros did not skip a beat with Alvarez and Ambriz at the helm as they set the tone for the game with an overall offensive effort that blitzed the Lady Panthers’ defense all afternoon long.

Alvarez pulled double duty and came through on the offensive end for the Lady Toros.

United South could not find an answer for Alvarez, who had a team-high 12 kills, with five coming in the first game.

Alvarez became an offensive nightmare for the Lady Panthers, along with Deandra Gonzalez and Gloria Morales, who combined for 13 kills.

CIGARROA STATS: Genesis Delgado (13 points, 10 digs), Elizabeth Sanchez (eight points, one kill, eight digs), Deandra Delgado (14 points, six kills, 17 digs), Michelle Alvarez (four points, 12 kills, one block, nine assists, one dig), Sandra Ambriz (14 points, four kills, 11 assists, three blocks), Mara Martinez (five points), Gloria Morales (seven kills, three blocks), Alejandra Reyes (eight blocks) and Vilma Rodriguez (five digs).

UNITED SOUTH STATS: Linda Resendez (17 digs, four points), Ashley Gutierrez (seven assists, six digs), Leslie Campos (eight kills, seven digs), Rohdale Covington (five blocks, five kills), Valerie Nino (five kills, five points), Brandi Molina (10 points).

Week 2 Football: Alexander 46, United South 17

It was supposed to be a shootout, but only one contender brought any ammo.

The Alexander Bulldogs dominated the United South Panthers, 46-17, at the SAC on Friday night in a game where the Bulldogs (1-0 29-5A, 2-0) were clicking on all cylinders.

The spread offense isn't known as a time-of-possession offense, yet it looked like one Friday night. Alexander dominated the clock with a 20 minute advantage in time of possession.

The credit for that belongs in large part to the Bulldogs' defense, which came into its own after giving up 37 points in a 41-37 win over Alice two weeks ago.

United South (0-1, 0-2) only achieved two first downs in the entire first half, and nine by the end of the game. The Panthers were held to 138 yards of total offense.

Alexander, meanwhile, amassed 562 total yards of offense.

The Panthers made it interesting early by tying the game at 7 with an 85-yard touchdown return by speedy return man/defensive back Javier Flores, but they didn't score again until the final minute of the game on a Robert Camarillo pass to Amado De La Fuente.

Camarillo finished the night with 136 of United South’s 138 yards of offense by completing 50 percent of his passes and throwing for a single interception with his lone touchdown.

Bulldogs junior quarterback Brian Swain continued to make his case as the best signal-caller in the district with a standout performance where he did a little bit of everything.

Swain finished the game with 309 passing yards on 26-of-38 passing and four touchdowns through the air, along with 96 rushing yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns on the ground.

Daniel Ramos and J.D. Hinojosa each caught two touchdown passes, all from Swain. Xavier Skaggs rushed for 121 yards on 19 carries.

09.11.10: Del Rio 3, United South 0

Del Rio swept, 25-18, 25-23, 25-18. The Queens improved to 3-2 in District 29-5A, 8-5 overall. The Lady Panthers fell to 0-5, 8-12.

09.04.10: Martin 3, United South 0

The Martin Lady Tigers broke through a winless district drought that lasted three long years when they swept United South in three games, 26-24, 25-20 and 25-14, on Saturday to claim their first District 29-5A win of the season.

Martin (11-7, 1-2 29-5A) had the momentum from the inception of the game, despite falling behind in the first game, 16-12.

United South (8-10, 0-3) was in the driver's seat and had a 23-21 advantage in the opening game, but the Lady Panthers could not find a way to consistently serve the ball over the net and had a hard time getting their offense going.

Kazandra Blanquez quarterbacked the Lady Tigers in all three games, masterfully distributing the ball among Martin's big hitters.

Martin was led by the offensive attack of AK Valdez, Kim Reilly and Ariana Ramirez, who combined for 21 kills in the Lady Tigers win.

United South never fully recovered from dropping the first game and continued to sporadically put rallies together.

MARTIN STATS: Reilly (six kills, three blocks), Valdez (six kills), Blanquez (two kills, 24 assists, three points), Delgado (four kills, three blocks, one dig, six points), Ramirez (nine kills, one dig, one point).

UNITED SOUTH STATS: Linda Resendez (14 assists, nine digs, three points), Ashley Gutierrez (10 digs), Amanda Salinas (nine points), Marilynn Palacios (six kills), Leslie Campos (10 kills, seven digs, three points) and Rhodale Covington (three kills).

Week 1: Corpus Christi King 54, United South 14

The Panthers (0-1) were without their top two defensive linemen and it showed, as King jumped out to a 19-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. King scored seven touchdowns via the run, three from Dezi Rodriguez. Rodriguez scored on runs of 58, 16 and 27 yards, respectively. King set the tone by scoring on the opening kick when Johans Bravo took it 98 yards to the end zone. South junior quarterback Robert Camarillo completed 37-of-53 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns. Ricky De La Rosa caught 10 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown. Luis Castillo had the other TD for South, on a 3-yard reception.

The Lady Longhorns (9-10, 2-0 29-5A) swept the Lady Panthers (8-10, 0-2), 25-17, 25-23, 25-14. Leading the way for United was Valerie Gutierrez (six kills), Ali Sanchez (nine kills), Natalie Chavez (five kills, 15 assists, six points, five digs), Jessica Hernandez (four blocks) and Ashley Everett (nine kills). Leading the way for United South was Linda Resendez (17 assists, 10 digs), Ashley Gutierrez (eight digs), Amanda Salinas (10 digs), Marilynn Palacios (seven kills) and Leslie Campos (eight kills, 11 digs).

Best / Worst Case Scenario United South

United South enters the season as a middle of the pack team with aspirations to take a turn playing the role of top dog. The Panthers will be led at quarterback by Robert Camarillo, a junior who split time as a sophomore with departed QB Danny Salazar. The defense has returned to a 3-3 stack alignment after spending a season in the 3-4 to better match up against the spread offenses of Laredo. The panthers dipped down three wins in 2009 from four the year before, this year they look to get back on track towards aspirations of winning ways.

BEST CASE SCENARIO

The Panthers begin their season with a road trip to Corpus Christi to face Corpus Christi King. King is a triple option team which went 4-6 a year ago and already has one loss on the current season. In a dream season the Panthers would lock down the triple option attack with a strong defensive performance and introduce the Texas coast to the arm of Camarillo for a season opening win. 1-0.

Things get rough in a hurry for United South, however, when they return home from Corpus Christi to face Alexander a week later. The Bulldogs high-flying offense pulled off a thrilling victory on the road over Alice in week zero, and while they do have defensive question marks, it will be hard to imagine United South getting the stops it takes to win here. That said, it's not beyond the realm of imagination. If United South registers an upset over a playoff team it will probably come in week two over Alexander. Still, it shouldn't be expected, even in a dream season, and a 1-1 start is what you’re left with.

In week three the ante is upped with a game against United. With an offense nearly as potent as Alexander and a defense which might be the strongest in Laredo, this game is probably out of reach of the Panthers. 1-2

United South gets a break from facing playoff teams in week 4, but that doesn't mean it can enter the game sleeping when the Panthers face the Martin Tigers. Martin fell to Roma in week one when the team couldn't convert on vital goal line stands. In a dream season for United South the Tigers will again find their dreams stuffed at the one to allow for a Panther victory and a 2-2 start to the season.

Coming off of what should be a week 5 victory United South will host Eagle Pass at the SAC for a Saturday match up. The game is scheduled to be played at the unusual time of noon. The Martin game was on a Thursday night, which gives United South nine days of prep time for the Eagles, and they will likely need it. Eagle Pass should be one of the top teams in district and even with the extra days and a home field advantage, a win here is unlikely in a dream season. A close loss would lead to a 2-3 record.

The Panthers follow-up the game against Eagle Pass with a road trip to Del Rio. Del Rio should be one of the strongest teams in district and, at least this year, are probably just beyond United South's reach, 2-4.

The season gets easier from here, however, and United South closes out 2010 with four winnable games. The last four games alternate between Thursday and Saturday nights, making for an awkward mix of long and short weeks one after another.

Nixon is first on the itinerary and, thought new head coach Tommy Ramirez has the Mustangs rearing to go, a dream season would feature a big win here for the Panthers. 3-4.

Cigarroa comes at the end of a short week. Only five days separate the Nixon game from the match against Cigarroa and the Panthers will have to judiciously make the best of the time they have to be prepared for the big boys in the trenches for the Toros. Still, an ideal season features a victory against Cigarroa to tie the record up at 4-4.

A long week comes after the Cigarroa contest as the Panthers get nine days to prepare for Eagle Pass Winn. The Saturday night game at the SAC should be a win to give the Toros a winning 5-4 record.

The season finale comes against south-side rival LBJ. The Wolves have been itching to take down United South for years; the Panthers have never lost this rivalry game. A dream season will keep the dream alive and advance the Panthers to 6-4.

A dream season would feature wins in all of these games, and one upset of the reigning top four to deliver a 7-3 record and a trip to the playoffs. The offense will have to really come together around Camarillo for the dream season to come true, Camarillo's numbers will have to take drastic steps upwards from his sophomore campaign. On defense the 3-3 stack will have come together enough to stop the Laredo spread offenses and will really have to deliver against one of the big four for the upset to be possible.

WORST CASE SCENARIO

Dreams rarely become reality, however, and sometimes prove far from attainable. If United South whiffs on its dream season it might find itself in a season of worst case scenarios.

A nightmare season would begin with a road loss to Corpus Christi and would see the Panthers go without a win through the first three weeks of 2010 when they face King, Alexander and United.

Even in a worst case season the Panthers should notch a hard-fought win over Martin on a Thursday night in week four.

Weeks fight and six again see United South battling foes who would be night unstoppable even in the best of times, and in the worst of times the Panthers would be emerging from week 6 with a 1-5 record.

Even in a worst case scenario I don't see the Panthers going winless in their final four weeks. Best opportunities for wins come from the two opponents they get extra days to prepare for, Eagle Pass Winn or Nixon. The season finale against rival LBJ is a game the Panthers have never lost in history, and a truly nightmarish season would see that streak end with a loss November 4.

This would put United South at 2-8 in a worst case scenario, marking the third straight year of decaying records. Luckily for Panthers fans this is an absolute worst case scenario and the result should be well ahead of this mark

WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

With a spread of four wins between the best and worst case scenarios, It's like that United South finishes somewhere in the middle. The loss of two prominent defensive linemen to injury during the early weeks of the season makes any wins in the first three weeks highly unlikely. United South should beat Martin however, and should beat two out of Nixon, Ciggarroa, and Winn, and I expect at least one win from the Panthers over either Eagle Pass, Del Rio, or LBJ. This would put United South at 4-6, on the move up, and in good position to really strike out in 2011 when Camarillo returns as a senior.
