Week 7 Football: United South 27, Nixon 13
United South overcame its mistakes and took advantage of Nixon's to beat the Mustangs 27-13 at the SAC on Saturday night.
Despite a number of flags (the two teams combined for roughly 20 penalties), drops and a costly lost fumble on the Nixon 1-yard line, the Panthers (2-4 District 29-5A, 2-5 overall) were able to find the offensive cohesion that often eluded them earlier in the season as they piled 393 yards atop the Mustangs (1-5, 1-6).
Leading the way for United South was junior quarterback Robert Camarillo who threw 40 passes and completed 28 of them for 292 yards and three touchdowns from behind the excellent protection of his offensive line, which allowed Camarillo to be taken down only once behind the line of scrimmage.
Camarillo's favorite target of the night was wide receiver Orlando Contreras, who had eight catches for 104 yards and a single score.
The Panthers were led in the running game by sophomore Luis Castillo, who had 51 yards on 13 touches.
Nixon’s offense was able to produce 283 yards, but few scores to show for it as the Mustangs were intercepted twice and fumbled a third turnover away.
The Mustangs took turns with Manny Martinez and Joseph Contreras at the quarterback position until handing the reigns entirely over to Contreras in the second half.
Contreras finished with 89 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 10 of 19 passing, while Martinez threw for 68 yards on six of nine passing.
Nixon had seven different players carry the ball and was led in that department by Ritchie Rendon, who had 41 yards and a touchdown on eight attempts.
Mustangs wide receiver Danny Martinez had his team's lone receiving score among his three catches for 45 yards.
Wide receiver Jesus Perez led the Mustangs in receptions with four for 77 yards.
Always good for a bit of trickery, the Mustangs got their biggest play of the night on a reverse-turned-wide receiver pass when Perez found an open Danny Martinez behind the defense for 34 yards on a play which was nearly a 90-yard touchdown.
One Nixon player was injured on the night. Defensive lineman Larry Banda was hurt during a fake-punt attempt and left the field on a backboard.
It's the second loss to injury for the Mustangs, who also saw linebacker Robert Rocha go down for the season with an ankle injury weeks ago in a game against Alexander.

The Lady Panthers had a hard time firing up their service receive and Nixon took advantage of their misfortune, taking game one, 25-11.

The Lady Panthers never stopped fighting, but a strong performance by the Nixon offense that never stopped sending a barrage of balls that were mishandled by United South’s defense opened their lead on their way to a 25-16 lead.

Week 5 Football: Eagle Pass 42, United South 21
United South hosted Eagle Pass in a noon game Saturday where both teams got off to hot starts en route to a high-scoring 42-21 Eagles victory at the SAC.
Eagle Pass improved to 3-1 in District 29-5A, 4-1 overall. South fell to 1-3, 1-4.
Eagle Pass entered the game missing its star quarterback Tommy Galvan due to a concussion he received in his team's loss to United in last week.
Wide receiver Hector Gloria played the role of the signal-caller in Galvan's stead and the Eagles didn't miss a beat, racking up 392 yards of total offense.
The first half ended much the same as it started as each team found quick scores in the final minutes.
United South's score came with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter when quarterback Robert Camarillo hit Orlando Contreras for a 70-yard touchdown pass.
Initially it had looked like Contreras was tackled when landed on top of the defender, but he never actually touched the turf. The confused Eagle Pass defense gave up on the play as Contreras got to his feet and ran the rest of the way in for the score.
Contreras finished the game with a team-leading 130 yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions.
Eagle Pass responded to the long score quickly, however, putting its own points on the board with a 63-yard drive that lasted just over a minute and a half.
The Eagles capped the drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Gloria to running back Hector Pinales.
The second half began with an on-the-field scuffle when United South starting running back Luis Castillo exchanged blows with Eagle Pass linebacker Luis Gonzalez.
Castillo was replaced by Paul Lopez in the second half and Lopez made the most of his carries, 37 yards on eight touches, to lead the team in rushing.
The Panthers kept the game within reach through the first three quarters and had a chance to close the difference to seven at the end of the third.
After forcing an Eagle Pass fumble to get the ball at midfield, the Panthers drove down to the 2-yard line before Camarillo was sacked on a fourth-down attempt.
All told, Camarillo put on a solid performance despite being sacked six times. The junior quarterback completed 21 of 32 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns against just a single interception.
Camarillo's second favorite target was Ricky De La Rosa, who had four catches for 54 yards and a touchdown.
The Panthers finished the day with 300 total yards of offense.
The Eagles were led offensively by the arm and legs of Gloria. Gloria completed 18 of 25 passes for 195 yards and four touchdowns in addition to 54 rushing yards on seven carries.
Gloria's favorite target was Rolando Salinas, who caught 12 passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns.
Salinas also ran for 39 yards on six carries. Rolando Maldonado led the Eagles in rushing with 66 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.

10.02.10: Volleyball: United 3, United South 2
The second round of District 29-5A volleyball seems to be a thorn in the side of the top four teams with two dropping games this week.
Earlier in the week, Cigarroa fell to Nixon to throw a monkey wrench into the playoff scene and Saturday afternoon, United South almost pulled off an upset.
United (9-2 29-5A, 16-12) held off United South's (0-11, 7-18) late surge to hold on to a 26-28, 25-21, 25-13, 21-25 and 15-10 victory at the United South gymnasium.
Junior setter-hitter Natalie Chavez, who earlier in the day captured individual girls' title at the Dr. Marissa Keene Memorial cross country meet, did not skip a beat on the volleyball court as she recorded a team-high 16 kills. She added 21 assists, nine points and 12 digs.
Teammate Ashley Everett backed Chavez with 12 kills and three blocks.
Everett was instrumental in keeping the Lady Longhorns in the games with kills that came at moments when her team needed a boost.
